Essay Writing Workshop 1
Step 1
• Challenge and test myth by answering a research question
• Make yourself familiar with topic, read relevant required readings
• Use skills developed through commentary and thematic group report
writing, see how readings help answer the question
• Detect key terms – neoliberalis*, capitalis*, globali?ation, globali*
o Use above words (in combination with words that represent your
topic directly) when searching library databases
Step 2
• Further focus on some aspects of topic since it’s quire borad
• For example, focus on free trade, one aspect of capitalist globalization
• Or, focus on gender inequality as an aspect of social inequality in a
certain society
• Use these words when searching databases
Step 3
• Check recommended sources for those that discuss alternatives
relevant to your topic
• Find abstracts or full tests and read through them
• Get those that help answer the research question
• Find case studies or figures that discuss the topic
• Check their references as well and find other relevant sources
Step 4
• Draw upon good cases, examples, and figures discussed in academic
resources or publications by reliable organizations (ex. Transnational
Institute, World Bank, UNDP, etc.)
• Have clear and critical understanding of the key concepts
o Lecture notes and readings can help
• Start introduction by introducing myth to be challenged
• Explain how popular myth is, why it should be tested, how answering
question can test it
