To determine whether a child is within normal limits. (wnl) To determine the presence of a delay and the severity of the delay mild, mild- moderate, moderate, severe, profound. To determine the presence of a disorder. Are they developing in a typical fashion or order? why or why not. Delay: typical development is a little behind, disorder: untypical behaviour. General assumptions: communication development is part of overall development, developmental patterns are predictable, milestones are attained at around the same age in most children, developmental opportunity is needed, children go through developmental phases or periods. / negate the potential impact: developmental areas motor, cognitive, social & emotional, language and speech. We ask about brain and pregnancy development for case history. At birth a baby responds to stimulation: attention can be maintained: by 2 months has selective attending skills: can become used to or habituated to a sensation/stimuli.
