MGNT201 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Group Dynamics, Group Polarization, Role Theory
Document Summary
Groups: 2 or more people who are, psychologically aware of each other, and, who interact to fulfil a common goal. Formal groups - those defined by an organisations structure, with designated work assignments establishing tasks. Informal groups - neither formally structured nor organisationally determined. These groups are natural formations in the work environment that appear in response to the need for social contact. Some defining group properties are roles, norms, status, size, cohesiveness and diversity. We engage in certain types of behaviour based on how we believe we are supposed to behave: role conflict: a situation in which an individual is confronted by divergent role expectations. When compliance with one role requirement might make it difficult to comply with another: role strain: tension that occurs when a person is facing a single role having multiple statuses. It occurs within a single role: psychological construct: an unwritten agreement that sets out what management expects from the employee and vice versa.
