Races do not exist (as fixed, immutable, biological categories or as ways of defining populations of human beings: this is a scientific fact! But racism does exist: race is symbolic, governed and spatial, therefore, culture is a process. Common sense ideas of race are based on phenotype (appearance) But looks (cid:272)a(cid:374) (cid:271)e de(cid:272)ei(cid:448)i(cid:374)g, a(cid:374)d (cid:449)e k(cid:374)o(cid:449) that people do(cid:374)(cid:859)t al(cid:449)ays a(cid:272)t the way they look: ex. Korean adoptees (look korean but are not part of the korean culture because they were brought up in another culture) Important because social hierarchy is based on race, despite the fact that race is deceiving. Racial differences are reinforced and re-produced in the society to sustain social hierarchy. Favelas as a site to study a radically different cultural approach to race and racial different than most of ours. Ideas about race are embedded in culture (not biology!) Indigenous (indios) population (largely wiped out during colonization) Portuguese = first ones to enslave people (africa)
