Document Summary

Should be based on experimental evidence and special consideration. Momentarily there is a lack of systematic planning for reserves, we don"t think about what we need. We have a highly biased reserve system where they are often placed in remote places with unsuitability for commercial activities. There is often very low temporal security with mining and tourism being given priority over reserves, which isn"t consistent with conservation. Ideally assessed abiotic/biotic components that have strong predicative relationships with less well known components of biodiversity. These can help make decisions about reserves, but all need to be tested. Hotspots: exceptional concentrations of rare and endemic species. Often thought that if we save these parts, then we are providing the greatest payoff. At regional and global scales these hotspots can be informative for choosing spaces for reserves, however they don"t catch all components of biodiversity. We have an obligation to assess conservation value.
