Immunosuppressive drug-cyclosporine-increased number of transplants bc of improved survival rates and decreased morbidity but there are side effects. More then 2000 multiple organ transplants were preformed during the 1980s to cure a variety of diseases including genetic disorders, birth defects, diabetes and cancer. The most common multiple organ transplants were pancreas-kidney-duodenum combinations for patients. On a global scale it was estimated that of the more than 6000 heart transplants carried out by. 1988, 80 percent took place within the 4 year period from 1984 to 1988. The organ shortage spawned innovation in the procedures and techniques for utilising organs including the dev of reduced size liver transplants, split liver transplantation. The goal of transplant medicine is to manipulate the organ recipient"s immune system in such as way that it does not recognize transplanted tissue as foreign and hence tolerates it. Organ has to be well matched with recipient. organ sharing networks have been formed in many countries.
