A mechanical or virtual artificial agent, usually an electro-mechanical. For several millennia, humans dreamt of building machines that could perform unpleasant jobs. It took until the 20 th century before serious efforts to realize this dream began. In 1948, norbert wiener formulated the principles of cybernetics. Many robots do jobs that are hazardous to people. Industrial robots are widely used in manufacturing, assembly, packing and packaging, transport, earth and space exploration, surgery, weaponry, laboratory research, safety, and the mass transportation of consumer and industrial goods.
