Proteins are polymers assembled from monomers called amino acids. Sequences from multiple monomers form polymers that get longer and longer. Monomers can rotate on each other and form different configurations/shapes. Polymers can be made from different base modules as long as they can join together. All proteins are polymers of amino acids - 20 types of amino acids. Amino acid = amino group, carboxyl group, linked by a single carbon atom (alpha carbon) Different amino acids form through the addition of different side chains which attach to the carbon atom.
