EXSS2025 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Motor Skill, Mechanical Efficiency, Vo2 Max
Document Summary
Interaction of cns with muscles and joints = generate movement. How we learn perceptual, cognitive, movement skills across life span/contexts. Ability to collect, analyse and process information. Motor skill: activity or task that requires voluntary body/head/limb movement to achieve a goal. Ability to correctly coordinate and control the movement. Temporal organisation (control of movement patterns through appropriate timing of neural recruitment, muscle firing, relaxation. Skilled motor performance = max certainty, min energy expenditure/movement time. Skill: activity which has specific purpose or goal to achieve. Performance: a single observable behaviour or trial (one attempt) Learning: reflects a stable permanent change in motor skill - assessed over time. Reaction time: delay between presentation of stimulus and initiation of response. Movement time: delay between initiation and completion of response. Energy cost: oxygen consumption (vo2max, hr), energy cost, mechanical efficiency. Associative: associating environmental cues with movements required to achieve goal. Autonomous: not necessary to think about movement characteristics while performing.
