Civil society = realm of voluntary organisations found between the family and the state. Examples: labour unions, chambers of commerce, farmers" associations, religious groups, Boy scouts, getup!, australian christian lobby, greenpeace, australian republican. By convention, political parties ( political society ) and businesses ( economic society ) typically excluded. Pluralism: typically found in democracies, state takes hands-off approach. States are actively involved in which groups are allowed to exist and their internal activities, can wipe out civil society with no autonomy. Can go hand in hand with totalitarianism and authoritarianism. Totalitarianism: elaborate ideology, popular mobilisation, total absence of civil society. Examples: nazi germany, ussr under lenin and stalin. Nk, cambodia, china, cuba today but not that common today. Wants to mobilize every aspects of society behind the regime. Total absence of civil society- no independent readings clubs, religious org. Authoritarianism: no elaborate ideology, popular demobilisation, limited space for civil society. Examples: chile under pinochet, spain under franco.
