Examples: anti-colonial movements (e. g. , india, scattered among different states (e. g. , kurds, separatist movements (e. g. , quebec, scotland) Continuum with four levels: objective differences, cultural pluralism, politicised ethnicity, and ethnic violence. 1. objective differences: physical but never become salient (does not really affect life) but subjectivity salient: categorizing these differences. The distinction between color and other forms of ethnic identification thus derives largely from the failure to distinguish between ranked and unranked systems of ethnic relations. 2. culturalism pluralism: objective differences salient at societal level. People divided into identifiable racial groups, language groups, religious groups, etc.
