Antony, elusive pirates, pervasive smugglers: violence and clandestine trade in the greater. China seas (hong kong: hku press, 2010) e-book. Between 1600 and 1780, two basic forms of piracy occurred along the southeastern coast of. China: large-scale, well-organized fleets of merchant-pirates and small bands of oportunistic petty pirates. The former, active mainly in the first half of the seventeenth century, contributed directly to the rise of maritime commerce, especially the clandestine trade with japan. As with the wak of the mid-sixteenth century, these later merchant-pirates factored importantly in stimulating the overseas chinese and asian trade. But contrary to what had occurred during the earlier wak crisis, these later pirates conducted fewer raids on coastal towns. Instead, they operated mainly on the seas, plundering ships and also developing protection rackets.
