Cross between individuals diﬀering in two characters. !

Mendel’s second law or the law of independent

assortment: !

During gamete formation segregation of the alleles of one

gene is independent of the segregation of the

alleles of another gene. !

Hypothesis testing with chi square (χ2): !

“How well do the observed numbers agree with the hypothesised ratio, when each observation

falls into one or two mutually exclusive categories”. !

Firstly, need a null hypothesis H0 (e.g. 9:3:3:1).!

Secondly, look up signiﬁcance on chi squared table (degrees of freedom would be 1). !

Use a P value of 0.05. If probability

value is greater than 0.05, H0 correct

and data ﬁts with hypothesis.!
