Lecture 15 "Bacterial gene transfer
Plasmids: !
Covalently closed circles. !
F Plasmid (fertility): contains transfer genes. One-way transfer from donors to recipients. F+ cells
have the F plasmids, whereas F- lack this plasmid and can act as recipients. Exconjugant =
received new information from donor cell. !
Four insertion sequences in F factors, role in bacterial gene transfer, is known as episome. !
!
Alternative form: !
Rare occurrence can occur here, which is
recombination. High frequency chromosome = Hfr.!
Low frequency of occurrence but high frequency of
transfer once it occurs. Only transfers a fragment. !
