Document Summary

Provide a sufficient bulk volume for compression. Binding properties are better than alpha lactose, but not as good as spray dried or anhydrous beta. Highly compressible, one of the most widely used dc tablet filler. Produces hard tablets at low compression pressures. Starch good binding properties, also acts as a disintegrant, low quantity is not a diluent. Mannitol and sorbitol often used in combination, free from grittiness, sweet taste, cooling sensation. Inorganic calcium salts good flow properties, non-hygroscopic, insoluble, inexpensive, abrasive in nature (can cause wear of tablet tooling) incompatibility with some drugs (e. g. tetracycline) Calcium sulphate used for acidic, neutral and basic drugs because it"s a neutral molecule. Calcium carbonate incompatible with acid drugs because its acidic. Typically 2-10% by weight in the formulation. Binders are added to the drug filler mixture to provide cohesiveness. Most binders used in wet granulation tend to be polymeric.
