Document Summary

Evidence based medicine for respiratory disorders - asthma. A 2006 review, 17 studies were identified that examined the use of cam by people with asthma. Complementary medicines are associated with potential benefits, risks, side effects and drug-nutrient interactions. Asthma is a condition that involves reversible narrowing of the airways in the lungs. Symptoms include wheezing, coughing (particularly at night), chest tightness, dyspnoea and shortness of breath. There is often a family history and symptoms may be exacerbated by various factors including environmental influences, exposure to viruses and allergens. Cochrane reviews concluded not enough evidence to make reliable recommendations about value of cm therapies. Lack of evidence does not imply that a treatment is ineffective in all individuals. Cm treatment is not an alternative in most severe cases. Vitamin d appears to regulate balance of several pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory responses in the immune system and may play a role in preventing asthma exacerbations and steroid resistance.
