Some women put themselves (and baby) at risk by stopping necessary medications for safety reasons: medico-legal concerns mean some women counselled to abort otherwise wanted pregnancies. Mothersafe today: around 23,000 calls each year. 2-3 counsellors per shift plus >26000 views of mothersafe website a month and increasing. Clinical service - phone counselling, clinic visits where warranted: research. Education - teaching, dissemination of evidence based information, information provision. Public health role: model service for other states of australia. Clinic referrals: majority by general practitioners as a result of a recommendation by mothersafe counsellors, known teratogens, chronic medical conditions, excessively anxious, occupational.
