Document Summary

Different representations of waves, sound, light, ocean waves . Electromagnetic waves are light of some wavelength light can travel without a medium. Matter waves are used to describe particles like electrons which display wave like properties. Gravitational wave is the way that gravity propagates through space - predicted by einstein"s theory of relativity. Mechanical waves are a wave that propagates through a medium. A medium is any material through which a mechanical wave travels. In longitudinal waves, particles do not move over time. Need to distinguish mechanical waves from particles. Shape of a pattern of the wave. Waves have a speed (even though they move no matter in a transverse way) Number of dimensions (rope, ripple on a pond, speakers) Longitudinal waves have motion in the x direction. Transverse waves have up and down motion (y direction) Have both longitudinal and transverse components like waves on a beach. Each particle of the medium undergoes periodic motion / oscillation.
