One of the strongest prodromal risk factors for depression. Initiating and maintaining sleep: early morning waking. At least one month in duration and impact on daytime functioning required. Disordered cognitions: i am desperate and try to sleep, think about sleep, selective attention to sleep, attribute negative things, feelings to sleep, classical conditioning regarding environmental cues, cc to being awake in bed, catastrophising and over-generalizing. Avoidance/safety behaviours: different types of relaxation techniques- some are designed to increase concentration, others to relax. Early morning exposure = advance sleep onset: if it takes them ages to get to sleep, sleep onset latency, in darkness early, block out curtains etc, no lights. Early evening exposure = delayed sleep onset: if they get home and sleep 5pm to 9pm but then cannot sleep, put on all the lights and go to sleep later, encourage afternoon exercise.
