CAM202 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Alanine Transaminase, C-Reactive Protein, Aspartate Transaminase
Document Summary
Nh3 + co2 urea (nh2conh2: secretory, bilirubin (haem)- bilirubin conjugation and excretion, bile salts, copper, drugs and toxins- conjugation for excretion and detoxification, digestive, production of bile salts for fat absorption. Liver test panel: total protein, albumin, alkaline phosphatase (alp, alanine aminotransferase (alt, aspartate aminotransferase (ast)- not all labs do this test, gamma glutamyl transpeptidase (ggt, total bilirubin. Other liver function tests: blood glucose level, urea and ammonia, prothrombin time to test for clotting factors. Albumin: liver synthesis 15g/day, half-life is 17-19 days. Clotting factors: very short-lived, with factor vii having the shortest half-life, elevated pt is used as an early marker of liver disease. Glucose: hypoglycaemia is a way of measuring glycogen exhaustion, which can be caused by chronic hepatitis. Increased immunoglobulins can be monoclonal or polyclonal (usually in inflammation): monoclonal proteins can increase in cancers, including multiple myeloma (iga or igg), lymphoma (igm), and chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (igm).
