Social Rights II
Sexism
Establishing equal rights for women internationally has seen some progress but remains
disappointing. A dual standard continues in many patriarchal societies, involving discrimination in
labor practices, unequal educational access, different ethical codes for men and women, and
women being treated as property.
Even in Australia, the full-time gender pay gap is 17.9%, equal to $284.20 per week. This outcome
is inļ¬‚uenced by a number of interrelated work, family and societal factors, including stereotypes
about the work women and men ā€˜shouldā€™ do, working in different industries (industrial segregation)
and different jobs (occupational segregation), lack of women in senior positions (glass ceiling), lack
of part-time or ļ¬‚exible senior roles, and discrimination, both direct and indirect.
Racism
Apartheid is the most extreme example of this disturbing reality of human history. Still, 2-4 million
people continue to exist in conditions of slavery or involuntary servitude currently. Research has
found that when when matching resumes are submitted with white and ethnic names, white names
are signiļ¬cantly more likely to receive a favourable response. The Human Capital Lens assumes
equal treatment in recruitment based upon skills, including qualiļ¬cations, experience, and
knowledge, but fails to consider organisational factors of client ethnicity, management style and
restricted job speciļ¬cations.
Inhumane Treatment in the Supply Chain
Mistreatment: Direct/Forced labour
ā€¢Ikea used prison labour in Communist East Germany in the 70s and 80s (Connolly 2012)
ā€¢Poli/cal prisoner crimes included distributing anti-communist leaļ¬‚ets
ā€¢Former political prisoners are now seeking compensation
Apple and other TNCs that outsource manufacturing have been held responsible for the
mistreatment of the employees who make their products.
Child Labour
Child labour involves employment on a farm or factory for adult equivalent hours with detrimental
effects on childā€™s education.
168 million child labourers were noted in 2012, mostly in the Asia Paciļ¬c region. Often involves
hazardous work, adversely affecting childā€™s health, safety an moral development.
Child labour is monitored by the International Labor Organisation.
