Week 4 Lecture: Business Process Modelling
Business Processes
It is integral that a business analyst has an understanding of the business
processes of an organisation.
A business process has a strong emphasis on how the work is done within an
organization.
It is the combination of a set of activities within an enterprise with a
structure describing their logical order and dependence (has a beginning and
an end), whose objective is to produce a desired result (clear input and
output).
Business Process Modelling (BPM)
It is the activity of representing the processes of an enterprise so that the
current process may be analysed or improved.
BPM typically shows events, actions and links or connection points in a logical
order from end to end.
It allows the analyst to clarify responsibilities, identify process inefficiencies,
support continuous process improvement, support process management,
development and execution.
As a result of having a BPM, there are improved processes, value for the
customer, reduced cost, increased profit and competitiveness, better staff
morale and customer retention.
Process Decomposition
A large or complex process is more easily understood when broken down
using process decomposition.
Decomposition is the process of starting at a high level and dividing entities
into smaller and smaller related parts. Its main purpose is to break up a larger
process into more manageable chunks.
It can be broken down to three levels. The context level, first level, and
second level.
o Context
A system context diagram defines the boundary between the
system and its environment
It allows a team or an individual to produce a high-level model
of an existing or planned system.
It shows the system that is being analysed, the entities that
interact with the system, and the information/data flow
between the system and each entity.
A context diagram depicts the project scope at a high level of
abstraction but it reveals nothing about the system
functionality, architecture, or look and feel. Nor does it
explicitly identify the features or functionality that are in or
out of scope. It is merely implied by the labelled glows
connecting the system and external entities.
