Week 3 –
Principles of Visual Perception and Organisation
Seeing + Interpretation = Perception
We formulate meaning out of everything.
Gestalt Theory Human Perceptions
-Developed theories on how we perceive visual phenomena that constitute our
field of vision. i.e. form, shape, space, etc.
-1920’s Gestalt psyches begun research which continued for the next 35 years.
-Gestalt ~ German: “form” or “essence of shape / wholeness”
-“The Gestalt effect is the mind’s ability to make sense of visual chaos.”
-Gestalt psychology understand perception as a global, holistic process.
We take the big picture all at once.
We see an image as more than the sum of its parts and by combining things we create
new interpretations.
We see similarities in everything. i.e. we see faces in random objects.
Gestalt Laws of Perception:
-Pragnanz
-Closure
-Proximity
-Similarity
-Continuity
-Common Fate
-Symmetry
Pragnanz – German for 'pithiness', which means 'concise and meaningful'.
Completing a shape.
Closure – The mind seeks to complete incomplete shapes or form recognisable
shapes. The mind looks for simplistic patterns.
Figure & Ground – Figure/Ground relationships, shape visual perception.

Document Summary
Developed theories on how we perceive visual phenomena that constitute our field of vision. i. e. form, shape, space, etc. 1920"s gestalt psyches begun research which continued for the next 35 years. Gestalt ~ german: form or essence of shape / wholeness . The gestalt effect is the mind"s ability to make sense of visual chaos. Gestalt psychology understand perception as a global, holistic process. We take the big picture all at once. We see an image as more than the sum of its parts and by combining things we create new interpretations. We see similarities in everything. i. e. we see faces in random objects. Pragnanz german for "pithiness", which means "concise and meaningful". Closure the mind seeks to complete incomplete shapes or form recognisable shapes. Figure & ground figure/ground relationships, shape visual perception. A black shape on a black field isn"t visible; without separation and contrast, form disappears.
