Document Summary

Week 1: the development of the science of microbiology & the scientific method. Three domains of living organisms and their classifications: Classification: bacteria organisms are usually single-celled, bacteria organisms usually contain prokaryotic cell structures, bacterial cell walls usually contain the structural molecule peptidoglycan, distinctive rrna sequences, unique membrane lipids. Lack of peptidoglycan in their cell walls: eukarya classified microorganisms include protists, fungi, animals and plants, eukarya are usually unicellular, ho(cid:449)e(cid:448)er they"re larger than most bacteria and archaea. Define microbiology and understand its importance to our everyday lives. Microbiology: microbiology is the study of microorganisms that are usually invisible to the naked eye, special techniques are required to isolate and grow them. Importance of microbiology: microbiologists have the ability to isolate microorganisms from their normal habitats and culture them in isolation from other microbes and this is called a pure culture.
