Document Summary
There are 2 types of bone: compact (dense, spongy (cancellous) The fu(cid:374)(cid:272)tio(cid:374)s of (cid:271)o(cid:374)e e(cid:454)te(cid:374)d (cid:271)e(cid:455)o(cid:374)d si(cid:373)pl(cid:455) providi(cid:374)g (cid:373)ove(cid:373)e(cid:374)t or prote(cid:272)tio(cid:374). It"s also important in storing and releasing ions such as calcium and phosphorus. spongy bone is located in the ends of long bones, and enclosed between outer layers of compact bone in most other bones. Lacuna is a small space containing osteocyte in bone. The system of cracks acts as canals for nutrients to diffuse through. There are 3 types of cartilage: hyaline cartilage > found in the node, larynx and trachea. Under low magnification there is a pale pink strip in the centre, which may contain a slightly more purple centre strip with larger chondrocytes: elastic cartilage > found in the ears and epiglottis. Has a dark purple colour, which contains the large chondrocytes: fibrocartilage > subject to wear and tear. Can slightly see the fibres but not as smooth as hyaline cartilage.
