The Model Of Human Occupation (MOHO) - lec 10
MOHO concepts
Occupational adaptation is the focus of the model
The person
Volition - motivation for occupation (personal causation, values, interests)
Habituation - process by which occupation is organised into patterns or routines (habits,
roles)
Performance Capacity - physical and mental abilities that underlie skilled occupational
performance (is influenced by Musculoskeletal body system, Neurological body system,
Cardiopulmonary body system, Mental and cognitive abilities)
Human occupation
Participation
Performance Skill
Hierarchy of doing
Participation - Engaging in work, play, ADL that are part of a person’s socio-cultural context and
desired or necessary to well-being eg. volunteering, socialising with friends, working as a nurse etc
Skills - Discrete purposeful goal directed actions that make up performance eg. wipe the windows,
cut up carrots, measure the medicine and prepare the needle
Guide therapy interventions
Therapist highlight the facilitators
Identify and change or modify barriers
PEOP model
The occupation is the medium that connects the person and the environment
GOAL = Occupational performance + Occupational participation
Values the narrative of a person
'top down' approach for problem identification and problem solving - look at the bigger
picture (what does the client want to achieve and then work down to the smaller things that
make them unable to achieve it)
Emphasises higher order performance
The model is a tool for therapists to organise knowledge, and plan interventions
Three domains
Person factors
Used to describe capacity or impairment in a person
Environmental factors
Physical, social, cultural, policy and technological influences that enable or limit a person's
occupation
