Week 11 - Assisted Mobility: Walking Aids and
Wheelchairs
Functional Mobility
= the integration of transfers and walking into ADLs and IADLs (I=Instrumental)
Assess client's abilities in ADLs/IADLs within the client's environment
Based on understanding of client habits, routines and roles
Follows physio recommendations re walking/transfers
Do prescribe wheelchairs
Assistive Technology (AT) - recap

to perform tasks they would otherwise be unable to do, or increases the ease and safety with which
tasks can be performed
Walking aids are used to:
Support part of the body weight through the arm(s)
May provide sensory cues for balance
May enhance stability by increasing the size of the base support
Assist with confidence when mobilising
Compensate for deficits in balance and strength decrease pain
Decrease weight bearing on affected joints
Help with fracture healing
Compensate for absence of a lower limb
Walking aids
TYPES OF WALKING AIDS
Pick up frame (need to pick up to use and walk)
Wheeled walker
Walking stick
Canadian crutches (round band at top)
Axillary crutches (under armpit)
Walking stick
Use of crutches
Height: 4-5cm below anterior axillary fold
Hand grip level with ulnar styloid when arm straight
Crutches 10-15cm anterior and lateral to toes
Ensure elbow flexed to 300
If using Canadian Crutches, follow the same procedure + ensure cuff is 4cm below olecranon process
Ensure your client is safe while measuring the equipment.
Pick up frame
Measurement:
Measure in standing (ensure your client in safe)
Adjust height of handgrips on frame to the level of the greater trochanter
Check: Elbow should be at 30 degrees flexion
