ANHB3324 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Pterygopalatine Ganglion, Lesser Palatine Nerve, Greater Palatine Nerve
LECTURE SIX: Pterygo-Palatine Fossa (PPF)
PPF Boundaries:
• Posterior → front/orbit side of sphenoid, f. rotundum, pterygoid canal
• Anterior → inferior orbital fissure, posterior maxilla
• Lateral → pterygo-maxillary fissure
• Medial → vertical plate of palatine bone, spheno-palatine fossa, nasal
cavity on other side
• Superior → sphenoid bone, frontal cortex
• No immediate inferior border → continues down to palate
Maxillary Division of Trigeminal Nerve:
• All branches radiate from PPF → apart from meningeal branch
• Via all communications of PPF
• Maxillary nerve → travels through the orbit
• Anterior
o Via infra-orbital groove and canal
o Infraorbital nerve and its branches
• Medial
o To nasal cavity via spheno-palatine foramen
o Long and short spheno-palatine nerve and its branches
• Inferior
o Greater palatine nerve → supplies hard palate
o Lesser palatine nerve → supplies soft palate
o Travel out of greater/lesser palatine foramen → variability in
number of foramen for nerves
• Recurrent nerve travels out and around f. rotundum
Branches of Infraorbital Nerve:
• Anterior-middle-superior alveolar nerve → supply
lips/gums/incisors/molars → vast majority of maxillary nerve
• Posterior-superior alveolar nerve → supplies alveolar
process/gums/molars → travels laterally
Branches of Spehno-Palatine Nerve:
• Short
o Supplies top of nasal cavity
o General somatic sensation function
o No relation to smell
• Long
o Follows roof of nasal cavity and nasal septum
o Exits out naso-palatine canal
o Supplies palate, nasal septum
o General somatic sensation function
Additional Functional Components:
• GSS → sensory to all areas
