Document Summary

Long distance running - enough oxygen for anaerobic respiration. Sprinting - aerobic (not enough oxygen coming in) - not sustainable. Hurts because there"s a build up of toxic products that require oxygen to be removed from body. Broken down into two pyruvate molecules - each molecule has three carbon. Three phases to cellular respiration: glycolysis - happens outside mitochondria in cytoplasm, citric acid cycle, electron transport chain - involves chemiosmosis, reduction potential, glycolysis. Generates 2 atp and some nadh (can transport energy) Pyruvate molecules di use into matrix of mitochondrion. Pyruvate denydrogenase complex (catalyst) takes pyruvate molecule and splits into two components - coa and carbon dioxide (1/3 of carbon dioxide exhaled) Coa enters citric acid cycle: citric acid cycle. Produces more co2 (remaining 2/3 gone), 2 more atp, more nadh, fadh. Co2 admitted as waste - need oxygen to go ahead. Acetyl coa goes in, waste comes out: electron transport chain.
