IMED1002 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Equilibrium Constant, Chitin, Xylulose
Document Summary
Lecture #4: isomerism and cell chemistry: 5th march 2018. Have an understanding of the types of isomerism and the importance of optical isomers. Define polarity, the chemistry and properties of water and its role in ionisation and hydration. Describe the differences between acids and bases. Readings: chapter 1 (1. 2), chapter 2 (2. 1, 2. 2, 2. 3, 2. 4) Shape of biological molecules impacts function and activity. Small difference in orientation of a functional group- profoundly alter function. Functional groups and carbon atoms- often be arranged in different ways: have same molecular formulae= isomerism and the 2 molecules are isomers. Structural isomerism: have different properties- occur when alkyl or functional groups occupy different positions in molecule, several types. Chain isomerism- butane and methylpropane (both c4h10) Structural isomerism: positional isomerism- different placement of a functional group, e. g. propan-1-ol and propan-2-ol (both c3h8o, functional group isomerism- due to changing a functional group (both c3h6o, e. g. propanal (aldehyde) and propanone (ketone)
