Document Summary

Understand immune system in early life should hep preventing mortality and morbidity in childhood. Neonates have an immune system similar to the adult one. Immune system of the neonates is not good at defence but excellent at regulation. Why is it important: early life is a period of high susceptibility to diseases that depend on immune function: Infectious disease: allergic disease, early life health conditions long term health, an optimal immune system requires balanced and adapted effector and regulatory immune responses: Effector immune responses (th1, th2, th17) towards pathogens and cancer cells. No regulatory immune responses towards allergens and anti-antigens. A balance of regulatory immune responses towards pathogens and effector immune responses towards allergens. Immune system function is not optimal in early life: high susceptibility in infectious disease and allergic disease. Need cells and mediators- cytokines and antibodies effector immune responses th1, th2, th17 towards the pathogens and cancer cells.
