Labelling by society (those in power) label those with small rule infractions (overreaction). Social world is actively created by individuals in their interactions. Individuals respond actively and bring their own perspective and meaning to situations. Subjective - how we typify others eg. juvenile offenders, mentally ill. How we relate to others based on these typi cations. Process where others attempt to impose an identity upon us. No act in itself is deviant - only labelled to create the idea of deviance. Labelling theorists argue society and those is powerful positions create deviance by overreacting to minor rule breaking. May lead to negative socialisation and construction of individual identities. Howard becker - acts are not intrinsically deviance, deviance is created due to social groups. May not know the rules but still be deviant.
