Week 3 - Perceiving Ourselves and Others in Organisations
Perception -
1. Definition: Process by which individuals organize and interpret their sensory impression
to give meaning to their environment
2. Importance: People’s behaviour is based on their perception of reality.
3. Factors affecting perception:
a. Perceiver - attitudes, motives, interest, experience, expectations
b. Target - motion, size, background, similarity
c. Situation - time, work and social setting
Personal self -
Characteristics that differentiate you from others
Relational self:
Characteristics that are shared with you relationship partners
Based on personalized bonds of attachment
Collective self:
Characteristic that differentiate in group members from out groups.
Based on impersonal bonds.
Characteristics of Self-Concept
1. Complexity - The number and distinctiveness of roles or identities you have
a. Self-complexity is assumed to facilitate leader development and adjust to
different cultural settings
2. Internal Consistency - Exhibit similar personality and values across multiple selves.
3. Clarity - Clearly and confidently defined, consistent and stable across time
Self-evaluation Process:
1. Self-evaluation is directed by motives.
Self-assessment:
1. Desire to have accurate information about oneself
2. Reduce uncertainty about abilities
3. Accurate self-knowledge enables one to select activities or goals appropriate for level of
skill.
Self-enhancement:
Drive to promote positive self-view
Better mental and physical health
Self-verification:
Motivation to confirm and maintain our self-concept
Stabilises our self-concept.
