Pre-lecture 5
Binary compounds
left hand side (periodic table) reacting with right
binary iconic compounds contain positive cations and negative anions
Type I compound: metal present forms only one cation
Type II commands: metal present can from 2 or more cations with different changes - Iron
ide - anion
Type I Rules
the cation is always names first and the anion second
a simple cation takes its name from the name of the element
A simple anion is named by taking the first part of the element name (the root) and adding -
ide.
Type II
can form more than one positive charge
charge must be specified
roman numerals are used
transition metal cations - require roman numerals
Rules
cation is named first and anion second
cation can assume more than one charge - roman numerals parentheses
Rules for non metals reacting
Type III
first element in formula is named first, the full element name is used
the second element is as though it were an anion
Prefixes are used to denote the number os atoms present
the prefix mono- is never used for naming the first element
Polyatomic ions
charged entities composed of several atoms bound together
Lecture 5
!
Clues to a reaction
chemical reactions often give a visual signal - not always visible
Colour change, solid forms, bubbles form, heat/flame produced or heat is absorbed.
E.g. solid forms - sodium dichromate is added to lead nitrate
Chemical equations
reactants (what we start with-left)
products (what we finish with - right)
Reaction atoms are not created or destroyed !
Physical states
must state in equation if a solid, liquid, gas, aqueous
