PSYC3318 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Inferior Temporal Gyrus, Temporal Lobe, Visual Agnosia
Document Summary
Recognition best for learnt view points- views40 degrees of trained view points. Single neurons in inferotemporal cortex respond differently to different views. Set of parts and their spatial relations also view specific. Cells would be conceptual- would be a word. Grandmother cells are in the medial temporal lobe- massive inputs from visual cortical arcas, including it. Mtl neurons respond selectively to complex visual stimuli. Majority of neurons are silent for any one object. Probability of finding one cell out of a few hundred million in the mtl that responds to one person is very small. Whilst some cells respond only to a particular person others respond to more than one person theoretical estimate that each cell probably responds to 50-150 objects/ people. Mtl is not necessary for visual recognition- link vision to memory. Visual agnosia- impairment in deriving the meaning of a visually presented stimulus low level vision intact can recognise object via other sensory modalities- touch/ audition.
