Document Summary

Tutorial 7: the four discourses that connel describes are sexuality as violence, sexuality as victimization, sexuality as individual morality, and the discourse of desire. The first discourse, sexuality as violence compares heterosexual teen relationships with violence; it essentially states that having sexual relationships when in adolescence will lead to abuse, incest, aids, and coercion. This discourse assumes that being silent about sexuality will mean there"s a decrease in sexual activities in teens. This discourse demonstrates a social construction perspective because sex isn"t something commonly discussed in society, and it focuses on the thought that abstinence is best. The second discourse is sexuality as victimization, which emphasizes women as victims and men as predators. It states that young women need to know they"re vulnerable and should protect themselves against men, who are going to attack and use women. There is an emphasis on young women to say no, as well as abstinence, and the risks associated with having sex.
