People are very reliable when it comes to observing a person and answering questions about them. If a student can tell how much a teacher likes them, that will affect them in terms of things like motivation (self-fulfilling prophecy) A teacher, by expecting a student to do well, draws out good behaviour. (they tend to challenge the student more, provide them with more resources and feedback, etc. ) We can see this in interpersonal contexts as well. We are not bad at assessing whether someone is attracted to us. There are some systematic sex differences in the errors that are made when it comes to assessing attraction. Men tend to overestimate how interested a woman is in them romantically. For men, having a sexual partner (evolutionarily speaking) has more upsides than down sides.
