Document Summary

Aggression is verbal or physical behaviour intended to cause physical or psychological pain. More research has been done on physical aggression. Hostile aggression: is driven by anger, when there is intent to make someone suffer, often occurs due to direct provocation. Instrumental aggression: there is intent to hurt someone but only to achieve a goal. Evolutionary theory: we tend to engage in behaviour that helps us survive/reproduce. Aggression can be for defense of self and the family. (e. g. (cid:449)e do(cid:374)"t see ra(cid:271)(cid:271)its as aggressive but if they are cornered or trying to protect their young, they will attack viciously). Many species attack when in pain, many species tend to get more aggressive when there is competition for a resource. Direct physical aggression tends to be higher in males than females. Competition for status tends to be more of a male-on-male thing. Men who have higher status are more likely to find mates and have more children.
