PSYC 2103 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Fundamental Attribution Error, Reinforcement, Dispositional Attribution
Document Summary
Self-esteem: our overall feelings or evaluation of ourselves. Attributions for success/failure: when something is a success, we tend to make internal attributions but if we fail we are more likely to make external attributions. False uniqueness: the tendency to view ourselves as better than average and exaggerate our abilities. False consensuses: when we exaggerate how similar other people are to us particularly negative items. Optimism about future: we tend to be way too optimistic about our future thinking we will make more money than we actually will for example. Judgments of validity: if we do well we will likely think that the evaluation was fair, but if we do poorly, we will question the fairness of the evaluation. Barnum effect: tell people what they want to hear and they"ll believe it. Self-handicapping: occurs when you want to succeed at something but you are scared you might fail so you do something that makes it harder for you to succeed.
