Acceleration of change – increase of globalization, much faster pace
industrial revolution
modernity- related to enlightenment – which is about the industrial
revolution
enlightenment – the idea industrial revolution is the result of enlightenment
enlightenment- way of thinking about the world..there was an idea of
progress [remember this word]
what is modernity again?
• Rationality – through using our rational mind … our skills…
mathematics, skills.. that later helped factories
• Progress
• knowledge leads to certitude
• history has a direction – knowing that things will change for the
better… used to not have running water…now we have
technologically advanced things – our life is more comfortable as
compared to the pas
• science allows us to control the world - people started building the
reailways
• idea of progress that there would be something better…we did have
progess….but shit happens… we did not always use progress for the
right purposes [i.e. atomic bomb]
• these machines created global warming – result of machines we
created.. Antarctica is melting
