The definition of a cell came in the mid 1600s. It took 200 years of observations and gathering data to understand how organisms work and how cells communicate with each other. Interested in playing with lenses and putting them together in order to look far away in objects they cannot see with the naked eye and make them bigger o. Robert hooke played with the same lenses used to see a star from far away: arranged and changed the shapes of lenses so he could see things with the naked eye o. Describe what he saw as small compartments with similar shapes and sizes o o. Compared it to a monastery (little rooms for all the priest) This is where the term where "cells" came from: he was looking at the cell walls. All interior structures of the cell wall were dead but the cell walls remained. Was able to look at the interior structure of the cells.
