Many individuals possibly will come to think that living life in a world where science is the main
focus may be easy, or even the thought of being judged by a caste is a life which is trouble-free
to live. Good morning Ms. Clemens and class. For those of you who may not know, my name is
Avneet and I am here today to present to you my seminar; the novel I chose to do my ISU on is
Brave New World written by Aldous Huxley. The novel, Brave New World first starts off in the
Central London Hatchery And Conditioning Centre in A.F. 632. A group of students visit this
building to learn about Bokanovsky which is a process of cloning. The clones that are being
processed are to fit in within either one of the five castes which divide into being Alpha
members, Beta members, Gamma members, Delta members, or Epsilon members. Each caste
plays a different role in the world, with Alpha members being ranked the highest with
intelligence while the epsilon members are ranked the lowest with intelligences and are known to
be labour workers. The members in the world live by the World State motto which is
community, identity, and stability. Soma, a drug is well-known in this world. This drug is used
by members when a person needs a holiday or time off from life; when the drug is taken the
person doses off for hours and is later expected to join back into the world.
To begin, a character in the novel, Linda takes soma to get away from her problems, “the return
to civilization was for her the return to soma, was the possibility of lying in bed and taking
holiday after holiday, without ever having to come back to a headache or a fit of vomiting”
(147). Linda feels the need to take soma after soma every time she comes back to society to get
away from the public and to get away from physical problems such as headaches or even
vomiting. A song which relates to what Linda goes through is “Paradise” by Coldplay. *plays
song*. Both, the artist and Linda experience the same situation as each other. The line “so she
ran away in her sleep” relates to Linda as she takes soma to fall asleep in order to make running
away from her problems possible. Furthermore, the line “dreamed of paradise” also relates to
Linda because every time she takes soma she feels better as if she was in paradise. Another song
which relates to what Linda experiences is “Happy” by Pharrell Williams. The line “because I’m
happy” relates to Linda since every time soma is taken she feels happy as she does not have to
deal with other members of the world.
