BIOL 1F25 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Somatic Cell, Neoplasm, Cell Migration
Document Summary
An increasing number of people in canada are diagnosed with cancer each year. What accounts for the annual increase in numbers: increasing average age of canadian population, increased pollution, increasing population size, all of the above, both a and c. Cancer characteristics: uncontrolled cell growth, single cell origin, gradual accumulation of several changes, occurs in somatic cell; most types show no inheritance. Most common type of cancer= carcinoma: epithelium cell origin. Leukemia are specific to white blood cells. White blood cells: types of cells that mature, growth and develop in the blood stream. Lymphomas: mature in the lymph nodes: both fight of infection, but different of where the cell grows. Sarcomas: produces cancer within connecting tissues, in bone and muscle tissue. These describe the initial types of cells that develop specific types of cancer. Cells are held in place by other surround cells as well as materials surround organs (basement membrane=hold skin cells in place)
