Lecture 4 Excitatory Connection -action potentials in pre-synaptic cell produce action potentials in post-synaptic cell (or INCREASED firing rate) Inhibitory Connection -action potentials in pre-synaptic cell inhibit (slow or stop) the action potentials in the post- synaptic cell -most common: >excitatory transmitter in human brain: glutamate >inhibitory transmitter: GABA; up to 20% of cells in cortex may contain GABA -dendrites: small electrical messages -axon: action potential large electrical message -synapse: communication between cells is chemical -electrical messages cannot cross synaptic cleft Summary -signaling within one brain cell: electrical (e.g. action potentials) -signaling between most brain cells: chemical (neurotransmitters) Reflexes -nerve cells are signaling units for behavioral responses -simple stretch reflex: knee jerk reflex -tapping below patella, pulls on tendon and stretches muscle -knee jerk reflex: monosynaptic circuit (1 synapse); sensory/MNs directly connected -most spinal reflexes are polysynaptic (more than 1 synapse) -reflex networks ca
