While it greatly reduced seizures, there was also a devastating memory loss. Retained memories from before surgery (old, long-term memories), short term memory was still intact. however, he lost his ability to form new long-term memories. What the world is about, knowledge of people, places and things available to consciousness (names, colours, faces etc) Skill-based learning was possible (e. g puzzles), showed improvement over time despite not remembering doing them.
