BIOL 1F25 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Growth Cone, Filopodia, Synaptogenesis
Document Summary
During development, growing end of axon called a growth cone. Plays a large role in helping the axon navigate (almost like a gps) Pond snail: cells taken from brain/nervous system can regenerate (unlike humans) > since there is a lot less cells, it is easier to nd speci c cells/their functions. Filopodia: the ne, hair-like structures that sense the environment (main sensors of the growth cone) > can make the growth cone turn and move in a different direction. Non-synaptic partners (cells that do not make connections with each other in the nervous system) Taken and grown together in a culture dish. Growth cones release signals to try and communicate. Since they"re not meant to communicate, they send repulsive messages and turn away from each other. When receiving a repulsive signal, growth cones may not be able to turn, but show a collapse behaviour where it balls up and pulls away. This collapse says do not form a synapse.
