Development of the central nervous system (cns) of mammals: 10,000 synapses formed in as short a time as 15 mins. During development it is essential that the growing axons of neurons find their way to the correct region of the brain. During development, growing end of axon called a growth cone. Studied mainly in cultured neurons (grown in a dish) Filopodia: the fine, hair-like structures that sense the environment (main sensors of the growth cone). Like sensors ex. of 2 non synaptic partners. I. e. do not make connections in the intact brain. When regrown i cell culture, they remember which cells to connect with. >collapsing causes a sense of negativity when receiving a repulsive signal, growth cones may not be able to turn , but show a. Collapse behavior where it balls up and pulls away. At a distance ( messages diffuses from one cell to the other )
