Week 1 screencast - introduction to cell biology techniques. In this course, we will focus of eukaryotic cells, focus on organelles. Cell biology is broadly defined as the study of the structure and function of cells. How stuff can be exported from the cells (signaling). Nucleus provides with the ability to encode for mrna transports into the cytosol. Ion movement, how membranes are produced. and turned into proteins by ribosomes. Smooth er important for the synthesis of lipids. Refers to the maintenance of cells outside of an organism (in vitro) Cells are a bathed in a solution (culture medium) that mimics extracellular fluid: contains nutrients, ions and growth factors, antibiotics are often added to prevent bacterial growth. The culture dish is often coated with proteins that are found in the extracellular matrix: for example, collagen or laminin, allows the cultured cells to adhere to the dish.
