We will typically focus on eukaryotic cells and the structure and function of cells. Culture cells= maintain a cultures conditions for survival and growth (invitro) Better to look at whole organ when studying function/lifestyle. However, in cellular we are interested in what is going on in the cell as a whole which can be manipulated to understand the function. Colonies of cells are all genetically the same. Nutrients/media of culture: have what cell cant make itself, amino acids. Special surface: cells adhere to other cells (animal cells) using cam"s (cell adhesion molecules) which bind to collagen etc outside of cells because they are on the cell surface. Antibiotics: kill of any microbes that get into plate/ prevent contamination. Place cells in incubator (at 37 degrees because its body temp) Expose them to 5% co2 maintains ph of incubator/media.
