Recommendation from john henslow to go on beagle (1831) Collected observations of geology,coral reefs, animals (finches, ants,bees,tortoises) 23 years after, published on the origin of species. Birds nearly identical to mainland finches, different beaks. Beaks adapted to type of food eaten~ fill different niches on islands. Their isolation on islands over periods of time made them undergo speciation. On mainland, insect eating warvlers & woopeckers vs galapagos niche filled by finches (usually seed eaters) First to present complete theory of evolution by natural selection (n. s) & supported with enormous body of evidence. The environment selects on viaraitons in the traits of individuals. Environment selects on variation in traits of organisms b/c cariants are more successful at increasing survival & reproduction. How charactersitics of species/organisms change over time/generations: why dorganisms are well suited to their environment. All species descended from one of a few common ancestors. Species sharing recent common ancestor tend to resemble one another.
